Design is not making beauty, beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love.
The Institute of Automobile Engineers (Sri Lanka) was inaugurated in 1988 by a group of eminent personnel engaged in the Automobile Industry with 82 participants. At this inaugural meeting Mr. Shelly Wickramasinghe, Chief Engineer of the Ceylon Transport Board and later consultant to British Leyland, was unanimously elected as the President.
The Institute in its twenty five years of existence had several achievements to its credit. Two major events that remind us are the incorporation of the Institute by act of Parliament in 1992 and joining the International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies in 1998, having its registered office located in London, UK.
The Courses and Examinations in Automotive Engineering and Management conducted by the Institute had become very popular among students and almost all students passed the final examination during the past have obtained higher professional levels in the industry here and abroad. Department of Motor Traffic by its circular dated 8th June 2005 had accepted the Corporate Membership of the Institute as a qualification to issue fitness certificate for vehicles.
There were several opportunities for our Members to represent at International symposiums conducted by International member societies of FISITA and to present technical papers. Our members have participated in biannual congresses of FISITA held since 2000 in France, Finland, Spain, Japan and Hungary. Technical Papers have also been presented by our members at the annual congresses of Society of Automotive Engineers – Japan. In addition, we have represented at Asia Pacific Automotive Engineering Conference held by annually.
Our students were able to build a Formula type car based on the technical specifications provided by SAE –Japan with the sponsorship of M/s Mc Larance Lubricants Ltd. in order to take part in Student Formula Competition held in Japan in 2009. We are proud to mention that they were placed runners up in the Rookie Class among eighty five competitors.
The Institute conducts several technical symposiums each year to enhance the knowledge of its members on latest developments and research in Automobile Engineering. All these technical symposiums are conducted by highly qualified professionals in the industry representing Manufacturers, Agents, Distributors and Dealers of Automobiles and Accessories locally and globally. We also publish a quarterly News Letter/Technical Bulletin for the benefit of our members.
Our strategic goals among others are to promote professional proficiency in Automotive Engineering among the members of the Institute by undertaking such activities as will contribute to such proficiency, to establish and promote representational link with international bodies embracing the automotive engineering discipline to undertake activities that will promote and develop the automotive industry in Sri Lanka and thereby contribute to the advancement of the national economy.
